An Artifact of Oregon’s Railroad Wars

In 1908, construction of two competing railroads began at the confluence of the Deschutes and Columbia Rivers - The Oregon Trunk Railroad was to connect with the Union Pacific on the south bank of the Columbia River, while the Deschutes Railroad was to connect with the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railroad, located on the north bank.

In one of America’s last Great Railroad Wars, competing construction crews sabotaged each others’ supplies and black powder stores and heaved boulders on camps of the opposing side. Tensions erupted into gun battles that required the involvement of the local Sheriff.

By 1912 trains were operating on both sides of the river but by 1925 a truce was established and the Deschutes Railroad from Moody to North Junction was abandoned as the lines agreed to operating and maintaining the line on the West.

This truce left the east side of the Deschutes River in Maupin graded and ready for generations to access the many world-class fishing and rafting sites along its banks. And left behind as an almost ironic gift of this tumultuous time, a cluster of cabins previously used as lodging for railroad crews found an ultimate and peaceful resting place - The Oasis Cabin Resort.

1915

Upon completion of the railroad these temporary cabins, originally used as lodging for railroad hands, were skidded into place and became known as “Williams Camp Cabins”

1940

The Cafe building was constructed as an addition to the original grocery store and gas station. Bathrooms were added to most cabins.

1955

Don and Viginia McLucas purchase The Oasis Cafe & Motel. It will stay in their family for three generations.

2019

A new chapter begins and The Oasis passes hands to new owners who are dedicated to the preservation of its rich history.
